A $9 Billion Mega Project Nearing Completion
Rising on Yumeshima Island in Osaka, MGM Osaka marks Japan’s first integrated resort complex, opening a new chapter in Asia-Pacific tourism investment. With a $9 billion project value and a 2,500-room hotel, it is set to become one of the region’s largest and most ambitious tourism ventures.
The New Tourism Hub of Asia-Pacific
Located on Yumeshima Island, MGM Osaka introduces an entirely new vision for Japan’s tourism landscape. The massive complex—comprising a hotel, casino, entertainment facilities, and retail areas—positions itself not only as Japan’s flagship project but also as one of the most ambitious tourism investments in the entire Asia-Pacific region. Its $9 billion price tag places it at the top of the global tourism agenda.
Investment Power and Expectations
MGM Resorts has increased its equity contribution beyond initial plans, raising its investment to $3 billion. The project encompasses 2,500 rooms, a casino, a convention center, entertainment venues, and retail spaces. Once operational, it is expected to generate over $2 billion in annual EBITDA.
Construction officially began in April 2025 and is progressing steadily. In a significant leadership move, Steve Zanella was appointed to head MGM Resorts’ Japan operations. At the same time, minor adjustments were made to the development plan to enhance the resort’s functional capacity. Meanwhile, at tourism forums in South Korea, MGM Osaka is already being discussed as a major draw for Korean visitors.

Management and Operational Changes
The construction phase, launched in April 2025, is proceeding as scheduled. During this period, MGM Resorts made an important shift in operational leadership by appointing Steve Zanella as head of its Japan operations. Additionally, revisions to the development plan were introduced to expand functional capacity, strengthening the resort’s competitiveness on a global scale.
Regional Competition and Attraction
The impact of MGM Osaka is already being felt across regional tourism dynamics. At forums in South Korea, the project was highlighted as a strong attraction for Korean travelers. In terms of scale and scope, MGM Osaka is being compared to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea projects and Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, underscoring its significance not only for Japan but for the entire Asia-Pacific region.
A Key Player in the 2030 Vision
By 2030, MGM Osaka is projected to emerge as one of Asia’s largest international tourism centers. For Japan, the development represents more than just a large-scale investment—it is a showcase for a new growth model. With its blend of convention tourism, luxury hospitality, and the integrated resort concept, MGM Osaka is poised to redefine the future of tourism in the Asia-Pacific.
