Rising from the shores of Istanbul to the global architectural stage, Galataport Istanbul has been honored with the “Award of Excellence” in the Urban Habitat category by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). The award recognizes Galataport’s achievement in sustainability, urban integration, and architectural excellence, establishing it as one of the key global references in contemporary urban design.
Previously, Galataport had already received prestigious national and international honors—such as MAPIC’s “Best Urban Regeneration Project” and the Seatrade Cruise Awards’ “Port of the Year”—for its innovative approach to coastal urban regeneration, respectful restoration of heritage structures, and strong environmental policies.
At the CTBUH 2025 International Conference held in Toronto, Erdem Tavas (Board Member) and Ali Pusat (Deputy General Manager of Project Management) accepted the award on behalf of the project, marking another milestone for Türkiye on the world stage.
Key Features of Galataport and the Significance of This Achievement
- Urban Habitat Renewal: Galataport redefined the concept of urban habitat with an architectural design that integrates seamlessly with the city, creating pedestrian-friendly zones and an open, accessible waterfront.
- Sustainable Architecture and Restoration: Energy-efficient systems, the use of local materials, and a sensitive approach to preserving the site’s historic fabric played a critical role in the jury’s selection process.
- City + Sea + Life Balance: Designed not merely as a port but as a living space, Galataport blends the city’s rhythm with the sea—merging streets, landscape, cafés, and art in a cohesive urban experience.
- A Global Benchmark in Architecture: Awards from globally respected organizations like CTBUH elevate the project beyond national recognition, positioning it as an international reference in modern urban and architectural design.
Galataport’s success sets a promising precedent for Türkiye’s future “urban regeneration + destination tourism integration” projects.
In particular, coastal cities, port redevelopment initiatives, and inner-city architectural ventures are expected to draw inspiration from this award-winning model, embracing new and sustainable urban visions.
