From Space to Earth: The Transformation of Baikonur

Kazakhstan has launched a comprehensive redevelopment project to transform the legendary Baikonur Cosmodrome, once the Soviet Union’s gateway to space, into a major tourism destination. Aimed at “merging space heritage with the tourism vision of the future,” the initiative seeks to strengthen the country’s cultural identity and inject new energy into the regional economy.

Previously accessible only to scientists and astronauts, Baikonur is now opening its gates to visitors for interactive and educational experiences. The goal: to attract over 50,000 tourists annually.

A Historic Base Opens to Experience Tourism

Under the project, Soviet-era launch pads and control centers will be restored and opened to the public. Guided tours, space simulation experiences, educational programs, and themed accommodation will form part of the offering.

Visitors will be able to walk the same ramps that launched the first human into space, see authentic astronaut capsules up close, and join “space mission preparation” workshops. Baikonur is thus set to become a flagship example of industrial heritage and experiential tourism.

Glamping, Camps, and New Accommodation Investments

The plan envisions an infrastructure that goes beyond traditional facilities. Former hangars will be repurposed into luxury glamping sites, allowing guests to sleep under the stars and feel the atmosphere of outer space.

For families, space camp–themed activity zones, hotels, and educational centers are being designed. In the project’s second phase, boutique hotels, museums, and interactive exhibitions will be added around Baikonur.

Economic and Sectoral Impact

Kazakhstan’s initiative represents not only a cultural transformation but also a strategic step toward diversifying its tourism economy. Opening Baikonur to visitors will enhance the country’s global brand image and strengthen Central Asia’s position as a rising alternative travel destination.
