Türkiye has officially announced that it will host the COP31 Climate Summit in 2026. Following Australia’s withdrawal from its candidacy, a mutual agreement was reached in which Türkiye becomes the host country while Australia will preside over the negotiations. With this decision, Antalya is emerging as a new hub set to welcome world leaders and the most influential actors in climate policy.
A platform where global climate policy is shaped
COP, the Conference of the Parties held annually by the United Nations, is the highest level decision making arena in the global fight against climate change. Countries define their carbon reduction commitments, adaptation policies, financing mechanisms and models of international cooperation at these meetings. COP31 is considered one of the most critical milestones since the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015.
The Mediterranean’s strategic destination takes the world stage
Antalya’s selection not only underscores Türkiye’s rising diplomatic visibility but also highlights the region’s geopolitical and logistical strengths. The city has long hosted the Antalya Diplomacy Forum and stands out with its strong congress infrastructure, extensive accommodation capacity and international accessibility, making it an ideal destination for large scale summits. This choice gives Türkiye an important opportunity to present its sustainability vision to the global public.

A historic window of opportunity for sustainable tourism
COP31 represents not just a diplomatic success for Antalya and Türkiye but also a process that may trigger economic and sectoral transformation. Throughout 2026, the city will welcome thousands of government representatives, academics, civil society organizations, media members and private sector leaders. This will boost congress tourism while accelerating the spread of sustainable hotel standards, green certifications and environmentally conscious travel practices.
The summit will also draw attention to the Mediterranean region’s vulnerability to the climate crisis and open the door to new tourism models that will shape the future of destinations. Antalya’s hosting of COP31 positions Türkiye’s tourism sector on the global stage with a new narrative centered on sustainability.
