Türkiye Steps Into the Global Rural Tourism Competition

UN Tourism Expands Its Best Tourism Villages 2026 Programme

The “Best Tourism Villages 2026” programme, led by UN Tourism, has officially opened for applications. Positioned as a global framework to redefine rural destinations through sustainability-driven tourism models, the initiative is entering a new phase in 2026 one marked by broader competition and a more structured global network.

Rural tourism evolves from niche to strategic growth pillar

Since its launch in 2021, the programme has developed into a global ecosystem covering 319 rural destinations across 65 countries. More than 230 villages have been recognized as “Best Tourism Villages,” while over 80 destinations are currently supported under the upgrade programme.

This scale signals a structural shift: rural tourism is no longer an alternative segment but a core component of destination diversification and sustainable growth strategies. The programme reframes tourism not merely as visitor flow, but as a lever for local economic resilience, cultural continuity, and community well-being.

2026 cycle introduces a more competitive and selective framework

For the 2026 edition, member states can nominate up to eight villages through their national tourism authorities. The application deadline is set for June 9, 2026, with results expected to be announced in the third quarter of the year.

The evaluation process is conducted by an independent advisory board and is based on nine core criteria, including sustainability performance, governance, infrastructure, preservation of cultural and natural heritage, and social impact. This multi-layered assessment reinforces the programme’s role as a global quality benchmark rather than a symbolic award.

A three-tier model driving long-term transformation

The programme’s impact extends beyond recognition. It operates through a three-tier structure:

Global visibility through the “Best Tourism Villages” label

Technical support via the “Upgrade Programme”

International collaboration through a global network

This architecture positions the initiative as a high-value, non-financial growth instrument particularly for emerging destinations seeking international positioning without large-scale capital investment.

Türkiye enters a new phase of rural positioning

In the 2026 cycle, Türkiye is represented by four destinations: Eski Datça, Adatepe, Sığacık, and Ziyaret Village. These nominations reflect a broader national strategy focused on diversification, low-density tourism models, and cultural authenticity.

With increasing global demand for experiential and place-based travel, these destinations gain competitive advantage through heritage preservation, local production systems, and community-based tourism models.

The new paradigm in global tourism: authentic value

The Best Tourism Villages programme highlights a clear directional shift in global tourism dynamics. Competitive differentiation is increasingly shaped not by luxury, but by authenticity, local identity, and measurable sustainability performance.

For destinations under overtourism pressure, this model presents a viable alternative. For investors and destination managers, it defines a new strategic framework one where value creation is rooted in culture, community, and continuity.

As rural territories reposition themselves within the global tourism economy, the 2026 programme stands not only as a development tool, but as an emerging benchmark for competitive advantage.
