Is Türkiye Returning to the Formula 1 Calendar?

A Five-Year Deal on the Horizon for Istanbul Park

Türkiye is accelerating preparations for a permanent return to the Formula 1 calendar. Through a joint initiative by the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED) and the government, a long-term plan is in the works for Istanbul Park to once again host Formula 1 races.

State-Backed Agreement

The transfer of Istanbul Park’s operating rights to TOSFED stands out as the most critical step strengthening Türkiye’s bid for Formula 1. Federation President Eren Üçlertoprağı emphasized that, with strong government backing, all financial commitments will be guaranteed by the state.

According to local sources, Türkiye is preparing to submit a five-year proposal to Formula 1 management, including an annual payment of €60 million. If approved, this would position Istanbul not as a temporary stop, but as a permanent fixture on the calendar.

The Madrid Scenario

As the 2026 Formula 1 calendar is unveiled, concerns have surfaced about potential delays in preparations for the new Madrid Grand Prix. Türkiye has indicated to F1 management that, in such a case, Istanbul Park could quickly step in and be integrated into the schedule.

Economic and Strategic Impact

Türkiye’s Formula 1 comeback is seen as more than a sporting development. The event is expected to generate billions of lira in economic activity, with ripple effects across tourism, transportation, media visibility, and national branding.

Officials stress that Istanbul Park’s modern track features will ensure it continues to be regarded as one of Formula 1’s “most iconic races.”
