A Tourism Innovation from the Faroe Islands: Self-Guided Scenic Drives Now Available

As of the 2025 summer season, the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic have launched a groundbreaking tourism experience. Developed by the tourism-tech company 62N, the system offers visitors the chance to explore hidden destinations via specially designed rental vehicles—without a guide, but along pre-set routes. These routes, although predetermined, remain undisclosed until the moment of discovery, offering travelers a self-guided journey filled with local charm and sustainable exploration.

Designed to steer tourists away from the usual paths, these vehicles guide them through more authentic, lesser-known destinations. The initiative is considered a direct reflection of the Faroe Islands’ tourism board’s mission: “Disperse the crowd, deepen the meaning.”

Off-Plan, Intuitive, and Full of Surprises:

Each Journey Writes Its Own Story

How Does the System Work?

Each car is pre-loaded with a digital route. Once the user activates it via QR code, the journey begins with stops revealed one by one throughout the day. A typical route includes four to six stops, but their exact locations remain unknown until the vehicle approaches each destination. This element of surprise enhances the sense of discovery and helps ease overcrowding at popular tourist spots.

Aiming for Sustainable Visitor Flow

While the Faroe Islands haven’t yet experienced the overwhelming tourism pressure seen elsewhere, this proactive system is designed to protect fragile ecosystems and small village life. Known for their inventive “Sheep View 360” campaign in 2016, the Faroese are once again redefining destination management—this time with algorithmic route planning. The program is seen not only as a new way to travel, but also as a new model for smart tourism governance.

Industry Insight: Mobility, Slow Travel, and Smart Investment

This experience goes far beyond classic GPS navigation. It places mobility at the heart of the travel narrative, transforming tourists from passive consumers into active storytellers. Each vehicle is connected with local businesses—routes include curated stops at small village bakeries, scenic viewpoints, artisanal cafés, and workshops.

The rental price is approximately $103 USD per day—comparable to standard rentals, yet offering a content-rich, immersive experience in return.

“Perhaps the best guide is the journey itself.”

This new model in the Faroe Islands doesn’t just chart a course—it invites travelers into a relationship with the road itself. Here, a route is not a fixed line but a living invitation; each detour is like an unanswered question waiting for discovery. Each new stop that appears on the car’s screen is more than a scenic view—it’s a doorway to a deeper connection with place and culture. In the Faroes, a map is no longer a limit—it’s a canvas for storytelling. The traveler becomes the narrator, and exploration becomes an act of attention. With this initiative, the Faroe Islands are redefining travel not as a matter of direction, but of awareness.
